Two member companies are prepared to start 2016 off with a bang by expanding to new locations. They share the exciting news that comes with company expansion, including new hires, larger spaces, and new partnerships and projects. Watch for them as they grow in the new year.
1. Uncorked Studios, a product design and development company, outgrew its current location on Southeast Water Ave. in Portland, Oregon. They have partnered with their landlord, Beam Development, to develop a new building in which they'll be tenant owners. They anticipate moving into the new space in September 2016.
“Every time we signed a lease we joked about what comes after,” says CEO Marcelino Alvarez in the Portland Business Journal. "Jonathan Malsin from Beam reached out a few weeks after the last expansion with an opportunity to design a new office from the ground up. We couldn't say no!"
Uncorked Studios helps teams build products with purpose through their shared expertise, space and financial resources. Says Alvarez: "We envision a world where innovation applies to entrepreneurs, non-profits, and the world’s largest brands in equal measure. We're not bound by history, politics, platforms or place."
Their diverse clients range from innovation teams at some of the world's top technology companies to non-profits, startups and brands looking to build connected products. Over the last year, its team has grown from 18 to 25 full-time employees. Uncorked Studios plans to double in size by the end of 2017, so their new space will fill up in no time.
When the Portland Business Journal asked why Uncorked Studios chose to stay in the Central Eastside despite up-and-coming developments in Portland, Alveraz responded, "This is our neighborhood for sure."
2. Gotham Greens, an urban agriculture company, announced the opening of its first greenhouse facility outside of New York in Chicago. The latest addition brings the company's total number of greenhouses to four.
According to member Eric Haley, CFO and Co-Founder of Gotham Greens, the move outside New York "represents a massive expansion for the company."
The state-of-the-art, 75,000 square feet Chicago greenhouse, located on the rooftop of the Method Products manufacturing facility, is powered by 100 percent renewable energy, has a team of over 50 employees, and will produce an estimated 10 million crops of local produce annually.
Gotham Greens' produce comprises of pesticide-free vegetables and herbs grown by sustainable and climate-controlled greenhouses. Founded in 2009 in Brooklyn, New York, Haley and his co-founder, Viraj Puri, had a vision for affordable, easily accessible, fresh-grown produce for New Yorkers. Its first greenhouse outside of New York signifies a growing vision of bringing quality produce to people nation-wide.
